Megacities – How they affect our living conditions

The Expo 2010 has been open since May 1 in Shanghai. A central topic of the largest world exposition ever is “living in the city of the future.” Architects, planners, and futurologists present strategies and visions of urban life. This is not simply a competition for the best ideas, it is a necessary process, because cities are where the future of human beings and humankind will take place. Never before have so many people lived in cities as today – and the number is constantly rising. Some cities are downright exploding! Such “megacities” with more than 10 million inhabitants represent both an opportunity and a risk. For some they offer work, freedom, and a sense of vitality. For others, they mean poverty and danger. The cities are as diverse and multifaceted as the people who live in them. What is life in a megacity like?
