Statements on the topic "Cultural Management"

Christian Henner-Fehr
"Last autumn, a blogger received 10,000 dollars from the 'Museum of Science and Industry' in Chicago because she had spent an entire month living in the museum and had written a blog about her experience. This example shows just how important social media have now become in the US, including in the areas of art and culture.
Facebook, Twitter and Co. have brought about a paradigm shift in external and internal communication; in turn, this is having an impact on corporate culture in cultural institutions. Increasingly, trust, transparency and authenticity will be the values which will shape work in cultural organizations in the future. Cultural managers, working as they do at the intersection between different cultural disciplines, are directly affected by these changes in their work. They will be able to take advantage of the various social media channels for the purposes of communication in the increasingly important network structures and in order to work together with their cooperation partners.
Whether it is a question of marketing, PR or indeed (project) management, the Social Web will transform the way cultural managers work and communicate in what I believe will be a very positive manner."
Christian Henner-Fehr lives in Vienna where he works as a cultural advisor and runs the blog on cultural management "Das Kulturmanagement Blog".

Nino Tchogoshvili
"I am an art historian, though I also work as a curator and cultural manager in Tbilisi. I organize exhibitions, conferences and workshops, working together with local and international colleagues and partners. In addition, I give lectures in cultural management and in contemporary art.
In contemporary Georgian visual art there are all kinds of different tendencies and approaches. Artists open-mindedly explore and thoughtfully engage with international art. In recent years, Georgian cultural policy has been geared more towards popularizing Georgian culture, yet there are still numerous unresolved problems and questions at the current time. Neither state-owned nor private galleries have proved able so far to establish themselves on the international contemporary art scene. Only very few curators and cultural managers have been trained to meet today’s requirements, which is why I believe international cultural exchange is both extremely desirable and important.
A few months ago, I teamed up with a colleague to found a non-governmental organization (NGO) which we called ’Culture and Management Lab’. Its aim is to carry out projects in the area of culture and training. We organize panel discussions and research and discuss current trends, positions and problems relating to the contemporary art scene in Georgia and the surrounding region. We establish new contacts and develop networks with colleagues from abroad."
Nino Tchogoshvili is an art historian who lives in Tbilisi.

Wibke Behrens
"The New Society for Visual Arts (NGBK) in Berlin is an art society which was founded in 1969 and differs from other institutions of contemporary art in a number of special ways:
For one thing, its democratic and non-hierarchical institutional structure is determined and upheld by its members (of which there are currently around 850). For another thing, any member can form a project group comprising at least five people and submit a project application to realize exhibitions, publications, events or film programmes, lecture series etc. on relevant cultural policy, social and social critical issues of relevance to artistic positions, often in an international context.
Among our members are cultural managers, art historians, cultural professionals, artists and humanities scholars; they all shape the NGBK’s content and strong structural profile.
Every year, all the working groups – which all work in a highly professional manner under the institutional umbrella of the NGBK – stage eight to ten high-quality group and individual exhibitions and art projects in the underground and in the public domain.
Part of my job as coordinator is to create a transparent and low-threshold infrastructure which allows all teams to pursue their work. This often involves not only professional supervision in the area of cultural management in all production phases of exhibition organization but also support of team-building processes, budgeting, strategy development and optimization of work processes, communication structures and information flows."
Wibke Behrens M.A. is coordinator of the New Society for Visual Arts in Berlin since 2001.
