 Microaggressions in digital communication often go unnoticed by the sender but can deeply harm the recipient’s mental well-being. There is currently no widely available tool to detect and prevent such language in real time. My idea addresses this by developing technology that flags microaggressive content before it is sent.

 This problem affects marginalized communities—refugees, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and persons with disabilities—who often experience subtle discrimination in communication. The target group includes users of digital platforms in co-ops, schools, NGOs, and workplaces who want to foster inclusive, respectful environments but may lack awareness of microaggressive language.

 Unchecked microaggressions lead to long-term mental health stress, erode trust in communities, and limit inclusion. Without a solution, the cost is continued harm, alienation, and reduced participation of marginalized voices. Addressing this proactively through digital prevention tools supports mental health, inclusive dialogue, and emotional safety in diverse settings.

 I propose an AI-powered tool that scans digital messages in real time to detect potential microaggressions and offers constructive feedback before the message is sent. It acts as a “compassion filter,” helping users reflect, rephrase, and learn—preventing harm while fostering respectful, inclusive communication in everyday digital spaces.
 
 2. What is new or different about this solution?
 
 Unlike existing AI tools that only moderate harmful content after it’s posted, this solution is preventive, educational, and user-centered. It doesn’t punish—it teaches. By integrating real-time feedback with emotional intelligence training, it promotes self-awareness and empathy, making it ideal for use in co-ops, schools, NGOs, and workplaces.

 If successful, this tool would reduce emotional harm, promote psychological safety, and empower communities to build healthier communication cultures. It would help marginalized voices feel more seen and respected—fostering inclusive digital environments where learning replaces shame and where words become a bridge, not a barrier.

 Most existing tools focus on content moderation after harm is done—flagging hate speech or blocking offensive language post-publication (e.g., social media algorithms, Grammarly tone suggestions). Few, if any, offer real-time microaggression detection rooted in educational feedback and inclusive communication, especially tailored for nonprofit or community settings.

 My confidence is grounded in a decade of experience in media, communication, and social advocacy—including work with refugees and co-op communities. Having lived through the emotional impact of everyday microaggressions, I understand both the harm and the opportunity. The solution blends empathy, tech, and lived insight, making it highly relevant and implementable.

 The biggest challenge will be training the AI to detect subtle and culturally specific forms of harm without over-correcting or becoming biased. Language is complex and context-dependent. To address this, I plan to collaborate with diverse communities and language experts to create a responsive, culturally aware training dataset from the start.
