Period in Germany: 2009 on a CAPES/DAAD scholarship
Research institute: University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation
Job: Lecturer of veterinary medicine and animal care
I visited Germany from January to December 2009 and worked in the Anatomical Institute at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation. During my PhD sandwich programme I did part of my doctorate there. Before that I spent six months learning German at the Goethe-Institut in Göttingen. It is extremely important for me to be able to understand the German language.
"Today I am appreciated more in my professional environment"
In the field of physiological research Germany is a pioneer and promotes scientific projects. This builds confidence, which I will transfer to my work. Today I am appreciated more in my professional environment. People also expect my work to be of the quality that I learned in Germany, and I therefore always try to do my best. Today I am a lecturer at the FUNORTE University and the University of São Paulo.
What I like best about Germany is the pedestrian zones that are full of people, with so many shops and places to get something to eat or drink. I also like the old buildings, the cultural activities – and so many different kinds of beer! But it’s not so nice to see the large numbers of unemployed people and the neo-Nazis.
"In Germany there are very many clocks, but no time"
The largest cultural difference is that in Brazil we don’t have many clocks, but we have a lot of time – but in Germany there are very many clocks, but no time. Universities in Brazil are not as multicultural. Most of the students are Brazilian and they usually have less money. The university also has less in terms of financial and technological resources.
In Germany I got to know many colleagues and I am still in contact with them. They include Germans, and foreigners from the USA, Morocco, Poland, Israel, Turkey and other countries. I also have many contacts in Brazil that I made in Germany.
I wish to be a good teacher and to return to Germany sometime to learn even more.
Alex Sander Dias Machado on the Alumniportal Deutschland
In the Alumniportal Deutschland I would like to talk to other people about science. I would also like to see more sections available in Spanish or Portuguese. In addition to the Alumniportal Deutschland I am a member of the alumni network of the University of São Paulo.
