Hands-On Project 2015 “Sustainable Living” - Final Results

Do you remember? On October 12th the Hands-on Project "Sustainable Living" has been launched. The challenge of this year’s online project was to not only find a good idea, but also to translate it into a concept for a digital product that will facilitate or raise awareness for a life of sustainability and protection of the environment and its resources. Supported by experts, tutorials and webinars, 21 international teams and more than 50 creative minds focused on topics like idea conception, user analysis and digital product-development during the past four weeks. The results are remarkable and are now being presented on the Alumniportal Deutschland.

Until November 13th you could help the jury to select the winner, as votes from the Alumniportal community will contribute to the final evaluation. Below you will find all teams that submitted their final results. Which project seems most interesting to you, which concept would you like to see realized? The voting is now closed (you can still comment and like but the votes won't be considered for the competition anymore).

On the specific pages you will find 4 files: The Pitch, the Prototype, the Product Canvas and the Persona(s). These files will give you a detailed insight into the ideas of the teams:

  • The Pitch is exactly that: a short presentation of the product designed to give an introduction of the digital products that were built by the teams to you - an audience who knows nothing about them yet. The Pitch tells a story about the product and explains its WHY and WHAT.
  • The Prototype explains the HOW: How will the product work? Which different steps will the user take on his or her journey of using it? The prototype is always a visualization of the product - digital products can be visualized in an analog way by just drawing.
  • The Product Canvas is an overview of various aspects of the product: What is its Name and Goal, how will the team measure whether the goal is being reached (Metrics), what is the Big Picture of the product, what are the next steps the teams wants to take in the future, and most importantly: who is the Target Group?
  • To describe the Target Group, the teams created Personas of their users. A Persona is a synthesis of different users of the product: Who are they, why do they use the product, what is the problem they want to solve by using the Problem?

TEAM 03 – Eco Kinder: Eco Amigos – Educational Game

The Educational Game Eco Amigos provides children at risk with a fun, stress-releasing virtual space. The educational game can help them to improve their environment through sustainable living.

TEAM 06 – Tree to Tree: The “Recycling Witch” App




A smartphone application that gives creative options on design and how-to-make steps to recycle used stuff and waste.

TEAM 01 - H.O.P.E: The 2You app

The app 2You connects food donors directly with social organizations that are present in the same area where the donors are.

TEAM 07 - greenmob: greenmob-mApp

Information on alternative mobility resources through a crowd-mapping mobile App.See routes and points marked by other users mark routes and points, get information about climate change or play the climate-change-game - choose which mobility resource you can use for which route and drive that route while avoiding obstacles and gaining points.

TEAM 09: Warm Meal

Stop wasting meals and food whereas other people are not finding something to eat. The team says: "Our topic is about a sustainable neighborhood. We want first start with a small idea. If we have a rest from our eating, rather than throwing away this rest, may be at this time there are neighbors who from different reasons are just now looking for something to eat. Among these neighbors nearby are families with: Various disabilities, old people, single parents (fathers and mothers), people who are lot working. Not only exchange or giving away a meal but also an exchange of food what we are already bought but we know we will not use it.”

TEAM 12 - Green Africa: Website to promote biogas

This project aims to promote the use of biogas for improving the living conditions of rural people in Africa in order to change the current situation. The plan is to assist the government to initiate a national Biodigester Program, to preserve forest discouraging deforestation and to strengthen the capacity of the population for sustainable environmental protection.

TEAM 14 - LeftoChibi: An app with tips for recycling of bottle leftovers

An app that gives you experience to learn DIY tips for recycling the bottle leftovers and also let you sell the bottles leftovers to the nearest waste collection Mashine for Points. The points can be exchanged for fresh money, cinema ticket, travel tickets, etc.

TEAM 16 - AgriPortal: Web-based AgriPortal




The ultimate goal of this project is to provide market prices’ transparency, increase farmers’ revenues, provide employment for youth and increase revenues for other market Players.

TEAM 18: FUN FARM: Food from Community Farming - Learning sustainable strategies and promoting healthy eating

Fun Farm is a smart phone / web based application (app) that assists the user in planning a farming project, sharing information and managing and following tasks in an effective and fun manner. The app also enhances communication between families and schools. Fun Farm helps the facilitator at each step of the process: from field preparation, planting and harvesting to promoting the project. It is also provides creative ideas for cooking while encouraging the interaction with others and learning through play, etc. Fun Farm is also an easy way to develop a project idea by assisting you in choosing the right crops and methods taking into account your current location and possibilities.

TEAM 21 - Zelena: Z-AdApp

This App can be used on a Smartphone or Cell phone. Thru the GPS intelligence resolves the gap among people with all sustainable information topics. It shows all Sustainable living information , by its location (based on Google map) to filter the first information and offers it and , gives the users information about following issues relating to Sustainable living where they currently can be. Thru the GPS coordinates it imposes, “pushes” information to users, before they demand it. The Z-AdApp is an interactive smart phone app that helps the user leading a Sustainable Living lifestyle. It gives information on demand, like tips, advice, maps, etc. It also prompts or imposes the user for time schedules, thru GPS intelligence activates location alerts, suggests Options.

TEAM 04 - ReWind: The Green Smart App

Green Smart - A tool that raises awareness, asseses sustainibility on living habits and makes it easier to improve them, by providing local options in the Latin American context. 

TEAM 19 - Green Homes: Green Homes App

An app that makes it easier for the average Egyptian to integrate sustainable living into his / her daily life. The authors say: “Remodel your home into a green one. Just tell us where you live, your lifestyle, what you need to change and your budget for remodeling and we will do the rest, step by step within your budget.”

Trickling Earth: An app to improve water availability for the people using it for agriculture as well as for domestic purposes.

TEAM 08 – Te quiero verde: “Te quiero verde” app


“Te quiero verde” is an app for teenagers from different backgrounds that invites them to join a community in which they can have fun, educational and cheap activities around the topic of sustainability. The main activity is create environmental consciousness regarding climate Change.

TEAM 10 - Team Captain Planet: Recycling Assistant

"Recycling Assistant" by Team Captain Planet is an application that helps people to reduce paper and cardboard in houses.

Developing a waste collection and management system for households and recycling the collected waste to produce biogas.

TEAM 15 - OrganikLink: Linking organic farmers to local consumers


Creating an app that links organic farmers to local consumers, reducing the long-distance transport of agricultural commodities and increasing small farmers’ earnings and autonomy.

TEAM 17 – SustainableBuddies: SustainableBuddies App

A tool to:
- help new and old citizens in a neighborhood/community/city to become aware of and get in touch with existing groups working on sustainable projects within the city
- help a person to get the necessary support to undertake initiatives in her/his neighborhood

TEAM 20 - ESI: online platform ESIweb (Economic Sustainability Indicator)

Assessing the sustainability of real estate projects Question / Problem: Investors / real estate portfolio managers / civil engineers / architects: How can I invest sustainably? How can we construct sustainable real estate? Solution/Process: We will make qualitative and quantitative sustainability factors into economic decision making senario such as investment, regional plan and construction/Entering planning data from buildings and locational data into online platform ESIweb (Economic Sustainability Indicator)

Jury

A jury of four experts from the fields of sustainability and the digital realm will select the winning teams and award the prizes. The jury will assess and reward the contributions according to fixed criteria. The jury consists of:

Patronage

The Hands-On Project “Sustainable living” is under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Günther Bachmann, General Secretary of the German Council for Sustainable Development.
The Federal Government appointed the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) in April 2001. The Council consists of 15 public figures, it advises the German government on its sustainable development policy.
