Focus of the CSP-Salon 2018:

Blockchain technology has the power to redefine essential aspects of our lives – from communications services, to banking, supply chains, law, accountancy and even governmental functions. The need for intermediaries such as central banks and lawyers will become obsolete as we move towards a truly peer-to-peer economy. At least, this is the promise propounded by many blockchain enthusiasts. The reality is likely to be quite different. There are many different perspectives and opinions on the impact blockchain will have on our economy and society. Some believe it to be dangerous and in need of a strict regulatory framework, other recognize it as the pathway to the world’s first “true democracy”.

All of this raises questions about the opportunities and risk as well as possible unintended consequences of the technology – also in regard to the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With blockchain’s potential to embed trust into our digital and physical asset transactions — what role could it play in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development? Will blockchain be a game-changer for the most ambitious development agenda of our times? These are the questions the CSP-Salon 2018 invites you to explore!

Format and participation:

The CSP-Salon will be held on 13 February 2018 at the German House, New York. It will feature an opening statement from the organizers and a panel discussion with experts and professionals (UN System, civil society, academia, national authorities) working with and on blockchain technologies in the context of the SDGs . Participants will also have the possibility to engage in a Q&A session to debate the opportunities and challenges of blockchain technology for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Participants will include DAAD and Carlo-Schmid-Fellows / Alumni from the international and private sector as well as academia, affiliated workforce from the UN system, and other actors with a special interest in the subject. Due to limited capacity of the conference room, the number of participants will be restricted to 80 people. The discussion will moreover benefit from a CSP-Salon Brief outlining the functioning and basics of blockchain technology as well as examples of current applications within the UN system and beyond.
