The traditional linear model of industrial value creation (“Extract - produce - consume - throw away”) is increasingly reaching its limits in times of scarce resources, high greenhouse gas emissions and ongoing climate change as well as growing amounts of waste worldwide. Environmentalists as well as economists have therefore long been calling for a transformation towards a circular, resource-conserving economic model. Reusing and recycling products can slow down the use of natural resources, reduce landscape and habitat disruption and help to limit biodiversity loss. Also, the circular economy can reduce greenhouse gas emission.

This panel discussion brings together international researchers and circular economy experts within the Germany alumni community. They will look at various aspects of the circular economy, discuss how it can be achieved and talk about the potentials and obstacles to its implementation.

Gamuchirai Mutezo

Gamuchirai Mutezo has 12 years of work experience underpinned by entrepreneurship, project management, renewable energy, and a keen focus on decentralising energy in African cities using anaerobic digestion. She is the Director of Circular Business Models at the (ACBA) and oversees the company’s daily business operations. Some of her duties include directing conversations, collaborations and co-creating circular business models and decarbonisation pathways to build a sustainable, profitable and scalable circular market in the African green economy and clean energy sub-sectors.

She holds a B. Town and Regional Planning from the University of Pretoria, an MPhil in Energy Poverty and Development from the University of Cape Town, a Project Management Certificate from the University of South Africa and a DPhil in Urban Biogas and Circular Economy from the University of the Witwatersrand. Gamuchirai Mutezo is also a member of the South African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA), South African Planning Institute (SAPI) and (GEN). Anti-Silos and Pro-Collaboration, hence her multidisciplinary interests and experiences.

Damaris Kerubo Oyaro

Damaris Kerubo Oyaro (PEng, FIEK) is the Chair of the IEK Capital Branch and Vice Chair Women Engineering Committee for IEK. She has a B.Sc in Civil engineering from the University of Nairobi, an M.Sc in Sanitary Engineering from the , and a Doctorate in Civil engineering from The University of Nairobi. She is a Fellow member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and a professional member of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK). She is a CPA finalist and currently, works as a Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Department of Civil and Construction Engineering. Damaris is an accomplished Civil Engineer with over fifteen years of experience and expertise in Water, Sanitation, and Environmental Engineering with diverse experience in research, planning, design, construction supervision, and lecturing. Her secific areas of interest include Solid Waste Management and wastewater management. She is passionate about environmental conservation, climate change resilience and mitigation, Circular economy, and sustainable engineering practices.

Piyush Dhawan

Piyush Dhawan is a highly regarded sustainability professional, currently serving as the Principal Advisor and Project Director of the German-ASEAN regional project titled "" (3RproMar). With extensive experience in environmental management and biodiversity conservation, he has held prominent positions such as Resource Mobilization and Partnership Lead for UNDP India and National Advisor on Business and Biodiversity for GIZ India.

In recognition of his expertise, Piyush Dhawan was honored with the esteemed by the in 2017. During his fellowship, he conducted pioneering research on Circular Economy in Cities in collaboration with the University of Cambridge. Beyond his professional pursuits, Piyush is also a distinguished speaker, sharing his insights on sustainability and Circular Economy.

Anwesha Borthakur

Anwesha Borthakur is primarily engaged in interdisciplinary research focusing on electronic (E-waste) and textile waste governance in India, South Africa, and the European Union. She was a at KU Leuven, Belgium, and is currently an affiliate of the same university. Prior to that, she completed her PhD in science policy from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. Anwesha was previously a Landhaus Fellow at the .

During her for experienced researchers with RCC, she analyzes the design of textile waste policies in India and South Africa and evaluates why the local traits that are centered around reuse and recycling are absent from the countries’ policymaking. The project aims to assess why India and South Africa are yet to capitalize the local waste management approaches that would align with a circular economy system. In her project, she expands upon the analytical and empirical scope of her existing thirteen-year research based on her experience of working on electronic waste (E-waste) governance to include textile waste.

Daniel Perozo

Daniel is an Environmental Economist, with vast experience in themes related to the resolution of externalities. Graduated in Economics at the University of Zulia in 2012, he also holds two Master's degrees: one in Environmental Sciences, awarded by the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi in Mexico, and another in Technology and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics, obtained at the (TH - Köln) in 2015. He has worked as a researcher in projects conducted by the World Bank, as a consultant for institutions such as GIZ Brazil (TEEB Project) and as an analyst of Amazonian socio-biodiversity value chains.

He is currently in the final year of his PhD in Environmental Economics at the University of Brasilia, and works as a temporary Professor in the Department of Economics. Part of his work is related to the design of economic instruments for solid waste management in Latin America, where he conducts a critical analysis of the Circular Economy as a strategy.
