Berlin universities cooperate in refugee relief

Freie Universitaet Berlin, Technical University and Humboldt-University of Berlin cooperate to make studies accessible for refugees.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) is committed to helping refugees on their way to a university education and promoting networks of dedicated University members and has acquired 189.000 Euro at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to increase their services for refugees in the academic wintersemester 2016/17. In cooperation with the Freie Universitaet Berlin (FU) and the Technical University (TU) Berlin four additional language courses will be offered.

Under the “Refugees Welcome at HU” initiative, the University has brought together a range of offers designed to provide refugees with easier access to the University, an entry into studies and research as well as an easier everyday life at Humboldt-Universität. Refugees interested in study can, for instance, apply to audit classes free of charge, attend the Student Advisory Service’s drop-in sessions or special multilingual courses.

Refugee researchers will be advised on the research opportunities available to them. These and many other offers are supported by numerous voluntary initiatives and dedicated University members. At the same time, many HU researchers are constantly dealing with topics relating to refugees and migration in various research projects.

Refugee researchers – or researchers at risk in their countries of origin – who turn to Humboldt-Universität will, where possible, be offered individual counselling that is quick and non-bureaucratic regarding opportunities to make connections with people in similar fields, funding opportunities and, potentially, their career prospects at Humboldt-Universität.
